Energy gels

Energy gels are carbohydrates in a gel form and help to replenish your depleted carbohydrate stores. Energy gels used in endurance events (running, cycling, climbing etc) and in every other athletic sports activity that you need to replenish carbohydrates in a short time like ipsc shooting matches.

Τhe carbohydrates contained in the energy gels are in an easily absorbable and digestible form without affecting the gastrointestinal system.

Usually they contain glucose, maltodextrin, fructose, water, preservatives (ascorbic acid), flavor compounds. May contain cane syrup, maple syrup, honey. You can also find gels with BCAA amino acids (L-Leucine, L-Valine, L-Isoleucine). Most of energy gels have also the option of being caffeinated or not (caffeine help alertness).

Usually energy gels are available on the market in sachets of 40 to 60 gr.(1,4 – 2,1 oz), and each one contain about 20 – 25g of carbohydrates, almost 100 – 150 calories per gel.
The gels that contain caffeine, have it in a content of about 60-80 gr., like a cup of coffee.

After consuming an energy gel quickly the blood absorbs the simple sugars, giving you a boost of energy.
It is wise to drink water after consuming the energy gel in order to speed up its digestion and absorption in the body.

At a 12 ipsc stage match in one day, 1 or 2 energy gels are a good choice.
Because practical shooting does not require as much energy as running or cycling, wait around 60  – 80 minutes between gels if you decide to consume 2 gels at match day.
It is good to test your energy gel training at the range before you decide to consume at match day.

In short, energy gels provide immediate energy and help keep the body from running out of carbohydrates. It is very good choice, try it.
