Metabolism is the chemical process that converts food and drinks into energy, it also helps in building and repairing body tissues.
The higher the metabolism, the more calories are converted into energy, the easier it is to lose weight or maintain our weight.
To increase our metabolism, the easiest thing we can do is to start exercising.
Exercise is the best regulator of metabolism and a powerful protective factor against metabolic diseases because it can improve metabolic function in many organs of the body.
We also have a small and temporary increase in metabolism when we consume our meal, called the thermic effect of food.
Metabolism can also be increased by certain drugs such as phentermine and amphetamine, thyroid hormones, caffeine.
There are also some foods that can help increase metabolism. They are the following:
Protein foods
The digestion of proteins creates a greater expenditure of calories up to 20% compared to carbohydrates or fat. Proteins are also more filling than carbohydrates, so we can consume a lower amount of calories overall.
Low-fat protein foods such as eggs, chicken, meat, fish, octopus, squid, low-fat cheese.
All should be baked or boiled or cooked with minimal oil.
We should not fry them or add butter or other oils to their cooking.
Coffee or tea
Coffee can increase metabolism by about 10%, while tea by up to 5%, mainly due to the caffeine they contain.
A cup (230 ml) of black tea has almost the same content as a cup (90 ml) of espresso coffee.
Chili peppers
Fresh or dried chili peppers can increase metabolism and give a feeling of fullness due to the capsaicin they contain.
Ginger
Contains compounds such as gingerol and shogaol that stimulate digestive enzymes for faster digestion. It also helps stabilize blood glucose, partially preventing its large fluctuations (increased glucose does not help increase metabolism).
Tips:
In order for them to be able to speed up metabolism, all of the things we mentioned above should be combined with exercise.
Also, carbohydrates in our diet should be limited to about 25-35% of the total calories we need.
It is impossible to eat 2 plates of pasta at every meal, without exercising, and by eating more protein and peppers, drinking coffee and ginger and ideally expect to see an increase in our metabolism while simultaneously reducing our weight. We will have a negligible increase in metabolism due to the increase in calories we consume, but we will not have any other benefit.
