Diarrhea is the passage of loose stools in increased quantity and frequency.

Acute (due to infectious causes) or chronic diarrhea (lasting more than a month) is accompanied by excessive loss of fluids and electrolytes.

What foods should we eat when we have diarrhea?

The recommended foods are the next:

1. Boiled white rice

2. Noodles

3. Boiled potatoes

4. Toast, rusk (from white bread)

5. Boiled chicken breast without the skin

6. Boiled chicken soup with rice and a little olive oil

7. Boiled egg

8. Banana

9. Apple compote

10. Jelly (not light)

Adding salt to cooked foods because it retains fluids and helps prevent dehydration from frequent liquid stools.


What foods should we NOT eat when we have diarrhea?

Foods that we should NOT eat are the next:

1.Any fatty food or foods with sauces, onions and spices

2.Foods that cause increased gas production in the intestine such as cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, legumes

3.Raw vegetables and any cooked vegetable that has fiber such as greens, eggplants, okra, green beans

4.Dairy products such as milk, butter, ice cream, cheese

5.Whole grain foods

6.All processed foods (such as bacon, sausage, ham, salami, sweets, salty snacks, soft drinks, certain types of bread, breakfast cereals)

7.All fruits (except bananas and possibly apples)

8.Nuts

9.Coffee, alcohol (they have a diuretic effect and contribute to dehydration of the already burdened organism)

10.Artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, sorbitol, acesulfame (found in chewing gum, soft drinks, cookies)
