Loss of appetite or Solid food is not enough? Try Liquid Foods !

Loss of appetite can be caused by various factors such as taking certain medications, a possible virus, cancer treatment, alcohol consumption, drug use, dementia, depression, dehydration.

There are also cases where we do not have a loss of appetite but we need to consume several more calories to cover our daily needs, such as athletes.

In addition, there are cases where we should not consume solid food, usually due to swallowing or chewing problems, serious mouth or throat wounds, jaw injuries, digestive problems (gastroparesis, intestinal strictures), recovery from a gastrointestinal infection, injury or illness or surgery.

The advice to eat small and frequent meals, to consume favorite snacks and favorite foods during the day, to have different colors and textures of food in our meals to make them more attractive is well known and correct.

To cover the necessary calories we need during the day if we cannot or do not have the opportunity to eat food, we can do so in addition with liquid meals.

Liquid meals

1. We make smoothies with milk or yogurt (which contain proteins), oats (which contain carbohydrates), nuts (which contain protein, carbohydrates and fat), fruits (which contain simple carbohydrates), cocoa (which contains good fatty acids and antioxidants and will improve the taste of our drink). We can add protein powder to make our meal even more protein-rich.

We can consume such smoothies during the day, after one of our main meals (breakfast, lunch or dinner), but also as a meal before bed.

The choice of combinations is purely personal and has to do with the tastes and tolerance of the foods by our body (milk or yogurt can be replaced with water, if they are not tolerated).

2. We puree foods to make them more liquid to make them easier and faster to swallow.

3. We add protein powder (without flavor) to creamy soups to increase the protein content of the meal.

4. We consume ready-made liquid protein or carbohydrate meals. Such meals are mainly used after major surgeries when the patient cannot eat food and needs to take in as many calories as possible in proteins and other nutrients, in order to have a faster recovery. They are very expensive but extremely useful in such cases.

Liquid meals for athletes

In addition to the meals mentioned, athletes can consume:

1. Energy and isotonic drinks. Ready-made drinks that provide the necessary nutrients for better endurance in training and better recovery after training.

2. Specialized protein drinks and supplements with a high protein content in an almost 100% absorbable form.

3. Specialized carbohydrate and protein drinks and supplements with a high content of these ingredients.

It is not easy for athletes to get all the nutrients they need from a proper diet alone. They must consume very large quantities of food, resulting in a high intake of calories from ingredients they do not need (e.g. fat, carbohydrates).

Liquid meals, mainly protein-rich, are an integral part of sports nutrition for peak performance, without the fear of gaining extra weight.

Liquid meals for healthy athletes should be consumed as a SUPPLEMENT and not as an exclusive diet.

This way we will have the benefit we need without depriving ourselves of the nutrients contained in a properly designed diet with solid foods.

The rule is:

When you can’t eat, drink
