The prostate is a small gland located behind the male bladder, it belongs to the male reproductive system and helps in the production of sperm.
It also contributes to urinary continence.
The prostate can present problems from the moment a man begins to have sexual intercourse. Up to the age of 40-45, problems arise from inflammation of the prostate, called prostatitis. At an older age, problems arise from hypertrophy or prostate cancer.
The causes of prostate inflammation are related to increasing age, with infection in the bladder, with possible trauma to the pelvis, with the use of a catheter, with sexually transmitted diseases, with a family history of prostatitis, daily long-term use of a motorcycle.
Although the causes of prostate inflammation are not dietary, there are certain foods that contribute to good prostate health. These foods are the following.
1. Tomatoes
Tomatoes contain the powerful antioxidant lycopene. Lycopene helps reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer, can reduce potential cell damage and slows the production of cancer cells.
2. Berries
Berries (and strawberries) have antioxidants and their intake will help protect against cell damage in the prostate area but also in the whole body.
3. Cruciferous vegetables
Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage contain sulforaphane which has a protective role in prostate cancer by preventing the growth and progression of prostate tumors.
4. Fatty fish
Salmon, mackerel and sardines contain omega-3, which significantly reduce the growth rate of prostate cancer cells in the early stage of the disease.
5. Walnuts
Walnuts are rich in nutrients like zinc, the powerful antioxidant selenium, and vitamin E, which have been linked to the prevention of prostate disease.
6. Pomegranate Juice
Pomegranate juice contains powerful antioxidants such as ellagic acid, polyphenols, flavonols and anthocyanins and can suppress the growth of prostate cancer cells by up to 50%.
7. Green Tea
Green tea contains catechins, which are in the family of antioxidants called flavonoids, which have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. Drinking 3 cups of green tea per day has been associated with a reduced risk of prostate cancer.
8. Pumpkin Seeds
Pumpkin seeds contain phytosterol, which helps reduce prostate swelling. 5 grams of pumpkin seeds per day are enough to treat possible prostate hyperplasia.
9. Garlic
Frequent consumption of garlic can reduce various parameters of aggressiveness of prostate cancer tumors, including their cell proliferation.
10. Turmeric
Curcumin can weaken the production of cancer cells and stop the connective tissue cells that hold malignant cancer cells in the prostate.
To help the foods mentioned in prostate health, they should be included regularly in our diet. During the week, the more times we can consume them, the more we reduce the chances of possible prostate hyperplasia.
In possible prostatitis, we should not consume
1. Sugar and sweets, because sugars act as food for the resistance and proliferation of microbes.
2. Spicy foods because they increase established inflammation in the prostate.
3. Processed or canned meat because it is likely to multiply the cells that lead to prostate hyperplasia.
4. Alcohol, in large quantities, increases inflammation and causes pain reflexes.
5. Caffeine, in large quantities, because it causes irritation in chronic prostatitis.
