10 Foods for Better Blood Circulation

Blood carries nutrients and oxygen to all the cells of the body’s tissues from the heart and brain to the muscles and skin and removes carbon dioxide and metabolic waste products.

A healthy nutrition is one way to optimize our blood circulation. Other ways are exercise, proper hydration and maintaining our weight as much as possible in our ideal range. By combining all of these ways we can improve our blood circulation.

Foods that can help improve blood circulation are the following:

1. Fatty Fish
Fatty fish like salmon, sardines, mackerel, trout, and herring are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 helps lower resting blood pressure and prevent clogged arteries.

2. Beets
Beets contain nitrates that are converted into nitric oxide, which dilates blood vessels, helping to improve blood circulation and reduce blood pressure.

3. Onions and garlic
They belong to the Liliaceae family and are foods that support good vascular and venous health through their blood-thinning effect, as a result of their very high content of sulfur-containing compounds.

4. Citrus Fruits
Oranges, lemons, grapefruit are rich in vitamin C and flavonoids and promote good blood circulation, helping to reduce possible inflammation that may cause difficulty in blood flow.

5. Pomegranate
Pomegranate has antioxidants and nitrates that dilate blood vessels and lower blood pressure.

6. Berries
Berries are rich in antioxidants, especially anthocyanin, which helps protect the walls of our arteries from damage and improves their flexibility. Anthocyanin also stimulates the release of nitric oxide, helping to lower our blood pressure.

7. Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Extra Virgin Olive Oil has antihypertensive effects due to its high content of oleic acid and antioxidant polyphenols. Extra virgin olive oil should not be fried or boiled at high temperatures. Consuming it in its raw form will give us the best results.

8. Cayenne Peppers
They have anti-inflammatory properties and contain capsaicin, which increases nitric oxide production resulting in better blood flow and reduced blood pressure.

9. Turmeric
It has anti-inflammatory properties, thanks to the curcumin it contains and can enhance the production of nitric oxide which helps to widen blood vessels, facilitating blood flow to the body’s tissues.

10. Coffee
Consuming 1 cup of coffee a day helps to increase blood flow in the body’s smaller blood vessels in the short term (promotes good blood circulation for about 1.5 hours).
