Lemons

Lemons are a well-known fruit mainly because we use them in small quantities to add flavor to baked goods, sauces, salad dressings, desserts, drinks, etc. but also for their vitamin C content.

A lemon weighing approximately 60-65 grams can contain over 30 milligrams of vitamin C.

Vitamin C is essential for health as its deficiency can lead to health problems with symptoms such as fatigue, bleeding gums, wounds that do not heal, joint pain, dry hair, hair loss.

Consuming lemon or lemon juice in our diet also has the following benefits:

1. Lemons are an excellent source of flavonoids
, which are a group of antioxidants that help remove free radicals that can damage the body’s cells and help reduce the risk of ischemic stroke in women.

2. The vitamin C in lemons also helps maintain healthy skin as it is important for the formation of collagen, the skin’s support system, but also in the prevention of asthma and the common cold, as well as in better absorption of iron which is one of the most common causes of anemia.

3. Lemon in the meal promotes the production of hydrochloric acid from the stomach and facilitates swallowing because it stimulates the production of saliva.

4. Lemon can prevent kidney stones, because the citric acid it contains helps prevent the formation of stones by binding calcium in the urine.

5. Lemon is an acidic food with a very low pH but in the body it becomes alkaline. When the pH balance is below 7.35 or becomes even worse acidic below 7.00, the body tries to restore it to normal levels by using mineral reserves from essential vital organs such as the bones, kidneys and lungs to neutralize the pH and eliminate acids from the body, then body’s stores of calcium, potassium, sodium and magnesium often reach low levels and in the long term can create serious problems such as osteoporosis.

100 grams of lemon give us approximately 40 calories, 1.1 grams of protein, 6.5 grams of carbohydrates, 2.8 grams of fiber, 0.3 grams of fat and contain, in addition to the vitamin C we mentioned, mainly B vitamins, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and small amounts of iron, zinc, selenium, copper and manganese.
