Psoriasis is an autoimmune inflammatory disease that causes the formation of cells and lesions in the upper layer of the skin. Possible causes for its appearance are excessive stress but mainly genetic, immunological and environmental factors.
People with psoriasis are likely to develop diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
Food is one of the factors that can worsen the symptoms of psoriasis.
Foods that we should avoid in psoriasis are the following:
Red meat
Red meat contains a polyunsaturated fatty acid, arachidonic acid, which can worsen psoriatic lesions. A diet with frequent intake of red meat can worsen inflammation in psoriasis.
Avoiding red meat can help reduce the severity of psoriatic lesions, as well as help prevent heart disease.
Processed Foods
Reducing your intake of foods that can increase inflammation, such as processed foods, is necessary.
A processed food is any food that manufacturers change during production, such as processed meats or dairy products, prepackaged and other precooked foods, and canned foods.
Gluten
Gluten is the protein found mainly in wheat and of course in its products. Bread, pasta and all wheat-based baked goods contain gluten, as well as many sauces and condiments because gluten is widely used in the food industry to provide elasticity, consistency in baked goods (and other foods) but also as a flavor enhancer.
Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease that causes the body to react to any food containing gluten. People with psoriasis have almost the same amount of specific antibodies as people with celiac disease and if they follow a gluten-free diet, psoriasis symptoms are reduced.
Alcohol
All autoimmune inflammatory diseases show reactions to alcohol consumption. For this reason, alcohol intake should be very limited.
Foods that will help us with psoriasis are the following:
Fruits
Fruits are rich in antioxidants, which reduce oxidative stress and inflammation. The fruits with the most antioxidants are: watermelon, apricot, avocado, grapefruit, pomegranate, papaya, mango, fig.
Vegetables
Like fruits, vegetables are rich in antioxidants, which reduce oxidative stress and inflammation. The vegetables with the most antioxidants are: artichokes, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, peppers, celery, tomatoes.
Foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids
Omega-3 fatty acids help reduce inflammation.
Omega 3 is found in salmon, mackerel, tuna, sardines, seafood, soybean, walnuts, Brussels sprouts, flaxseed, avocado, flax seeds, chia seeds, algae.
Foods rich in vitamin D
Psoriasis is associated with a lack and resistance of the body to vitamin D. Increasing vitamin D levels is one of the main reasons that psoriasis always improves during the summer months due to exposure to the sun (vitamin D has the unique property of being able to be produced by the body from sunlight).
Resistance to vitamin D means that it takes higher than normal doses of the vitamin to rise to higher levels in the blood.
Vitamin D also helps in the normal functioning of the immune system.
Foods that contain a large amount of vitamin D are cod liver oil, mackerel, salmon, herring, sardines, tuna, egg yolk and mushrooms.
Psoriasis is usually a chronic disease, with flare-ups and remissions. With the right diet and treatment by a dermatologist, we will help our body to have much longer periods of remission and fewer flare-ups.
