Foods to AVOID in PREGNANCY

To prevent possible complications during pregnancy, we should avoid the following foods:

1. Seafood and fish that contain mercury or are dangerous for listeriosis.

Avoid shark, swordfish, bigeye tuna, mullet, cod due to the mercury they may contain. Mercury can cause damage to the human brain and nervous system.

Also, smoked fish such as smoked salmon, trout, and ready-made seafood meals that have not been adequately cooked or heated due to listeriosis (a disease that causes serious infection) which in pregnant women can cause premature birth, miscarriage and infections in the fetus.

2. Uncooked or partially cooked meats

Avoid raw or undercooked meat (e.g. carpaccio) to avoid increasing the risk of bacterial (salmonella, e coli) or parasitic (trichinella) contamination.

3. Raw eggs

Avoid only raw eggs, to minimize the potential risk of salmonella, and any foods containing them without being cooked.

4. Dairy

Avoid unpasteurized milk or any food made from it.

Avoid soft and mature cheeses: Cheeses such as Brie, Camembert Gorgonzola, Roquefort due to the risk of listeriosis contamination.

5. Alcohol

Alcohol passes to the fetus through the umbilical cord and excessive alcohol intake can seriously undermine fetal development.

The so-called “alcohol spectrum” refers to Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). FASD is a group of neurodevelopmental disorders caused by exposure of the fetus to alcohol during pregnancy.

There is no safe amount of alcohol during pregnancy, it is best to avoid it as much as possible.

6. Caffeine

Excessive caffeine consumption is associated with an increased risk of miscarriage but also with problems with fetal development and possible low birth weight.

In addition to coffee, foods such as chocolate and drinks such as energy drinks and cola drinks contain caffeine.

Up to 200 mg of caffeine per day is allowed, but because it can have a negative effect on fetal development, it is best to limit it to a minimum.
