Hemochromatosis, i.e. the increased amount of iron in the blood, is a hereditary condition in which a large amount of iron accumulates in our body and is due to gene mutations.
If untreated, hemochromatosis can cause liver damage, diabetes, heart damage, and menstrual disorders in women.
The treatment of hemochromatosis is usually the removal of excess iron from the blood, i.e. periodic blood removal, something like a more frequent blood donation. Drugs that bind iron and help eliminate it from the body can also be used.
Our diet if we have hemochromatosis can contain everything but we should avoid foods with a very high iron content such as pork liver, beef kidneys and all animal organs (e.g. heart).
Any other food that contains iron can be consumed because iron is ONLY absorbed by the body from 2% – 10%, that is, very little absorption.
Iron it is found in two forms in foods. In the form of heme and in the form of non-heme.
If it is in the form of heme (beef, lamb, pork, chicken, turkey, fish, oysters, clams and animal organs) it is absorbed at a rate of 8% to 10%, while if it is in the form of non-heme (all plant-based foods like beans, lentils, spinach, asparagus, oats) at a rate of only 2% to 8%.
We should also NOT consume iron supplements and we should not consume vitamin C supplements, because vitamin C increases iron absorption.
