Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and genetically modified microorganisms (GMMs) are organisms whose genetic material (DNA) has been modified in a way that does not occur naturally.
Selected genes are transferred from one organism to another, even between unrelated species.
This technology is also called “modern biotechnology” or “genetic technology” or “recombinant DNA technology” or “genetic engineering”.
Genetically modified foods, based on the regulations governing their use in the food industry, must:
1) not have adverse effects on human health, animal health or the environment
2) not mislead the consumer
3) not differ from the food/feed they are intended to replace to the extent that their normal consumption would harm the consumer/animals in terms of nutritional value
The alleged advantages of modified foods that reach the final consumer are the following:
In foods of plant origin:
1) Better taste and quality
ONLY the natural product has a better NATURAL taste, but many times it cannot be good because it depends on the conditions of their production, harvesting, transportation and storage until it reaches the final consumer. So it is not better but simply the same constant UNNATURAL taste. The same applies to quality.
2) Reduced ripening time of the plants or trees that produce them
YES it is true but this is NOT their natural ripening so there is also a significantly shorter time of consumption from the moment they reach the final consumer because their deterioration is faster than natural foods.
3) Increased nutrient content
YES it is true, but the ingredients have been created by the introduction of genes from another organism, so they are UNNATURAL with a high probability of diseases and allergies appearing several years after their use without being able to be predicted.
Animal products
Increased nutrients
YES it is true although their difference with natural products is very small, but the ingredients are from a non-natural source, as in plant-based foods, with a high probability of long-term diseases.
The disadvantages or consequences of genetically modified foods that reach the final consumer are the following:
Risks for human health
Creation of allergies, creation of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms due to gene transmission, creation of unknown effects that may be related to malignancies or other effects on human health.
Also unwanted transfer of modified organisms to other organisms by natural means (such as air), loss of biological diversity in the plant and animal kingdom, unknown effects on organisms or microorganisms in the soil.
The speculation that genetically modified foods can provide a solution to the food problem of suffering countries is ridiculous and NOT true because the first scientific research began in the 1970s and they have been widely produced since 1994 without us having seen that countries that had a food problem no longer have one.
Consider that Brazil and Argentina occupy positions in the top five countries for growing genetically modified crops, and together with Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico, Paraguay and Uruguay, Latin America has cultivated an astonishing 42.7% of the world’s arable land with genetically modified crops, which is currently just over 2,000,000 square kilometers out of the 16,000,000 square kilometers that are currently arable land worldwide. Have you seen any difference for the better in countries with food crises? Has hunger been eradicated in the poor countries of the planet?
Over 90% of genetically modified seeds are manufactured by Monsanto, a leading company in terms of genetically modified organisms.
Do large multinational corporations have the goal and purpose of controlling global food production due to the intellectual property rights they have over their biotechnological products?
The increasing dependence of the poorest and least developed countries on the richer countries and the exploitation by the more developed countries of the natural resources of other weaker countries is something we should think about seriously.
