Additives in Dietary Supplements

Any dietary supplement may contain various additives, such as preservatives, stabilizers, dyes, sweeteners even if they are listed as “natural” supplements and that they do not contain “preservatives”.

These additives are related to the form of the supplement (capsule, pill, powder, liquid, etc.), the nature of the supplement and its required preservation.

The most common additives used in dietary supplements are sugar, sweeteners, sorbic acid (as a preservative), and various dyes.

Products that contain the following additives can be classified as dangerous for health and attention is needed when taking them for a long time:

AZO COLORANT:

These are dyes used to change the color of the product and can cause respiratory problems, allergies, and even cancer. Such substances are tartrazine, betacyanin, ruby.

CHEMICAL ARTIFICIAL ANTIOXIDANTS:

They are found in almost all supplements. Their use favors the growth of organisms and bacteria in supplements that remain open for a long time without being consumed. They can also cause cancer, problems with the kidneys, liver, thyroid, lungs, and blood.

The most common ones that have been accused of causing problems with long-term use are E320, E321.

DYES:

They are usually synthetic and dangerous. They cause carcinogenesis, toxicity to the reproductive system and allergic reactions. They are found in abundance in protein chocolates.

EMULSIFIERS:

Used in ready-made protein drinks that contain fat and in protein chocolates. They can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, intestinal problems, increased risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes.

BULKING AGENTS:

Used to give volume to the product.

Can cause cardiovascular disease, digestive problems and cancer. They are widespread in the manufacture of protein meal replacements.

STABILIZERS:

Help stabilize the product.

Can cause food allergies and digestive problems. The most well-known stabilizer is xanthan gum.

PROHIBITED SUBSTANCES:

Ephedrine: is a powerful stimulant that was previously used in weight loss supplements and as an appetite suppressant. It can cause serious cardiovascular problems quickly after taking it.

Codeine: causes strong analgesia so that the athlete can continue his effort even if injured or physically tired. Nausea, mood swings, sedation, mental clouding, alteration of the action of the endocrine and autonomic nervous systems are some of the consequences it offers if taken without medical supervision to increase performance in sports.

Cannabinoids: are used to reduce pain, combat anxiety and stress. Taking them can have side effects such as fatigue, change in appetite, dizziness.
