Glucerna is a dietary supplement that contains proteins and slow-release digestible carbohydrates as well as a special fat composition and has been developed specifically for people who are at risk of malnutrition, diabetes or for any reason have hyperglycemia, malnutrition or malabsorption syndromes.
When a person has diabetes, their body does not produce enough insulin or does not effectively use the insulin it produces. This can lead to long-term health complications.
The body’s response to blood glucose is the fluctuation of blood sugar levels and is related to diet and exercise.
The glycemic index is a system for evaluating foods in relation to whether they increase blood glucose levels slowly, moderately or quickly.
Foods with a higher glycemic index will raise blood glucose more quickly than foods with a moderate glycemic index. Foods with a low glycemic index will raise blood glucose more slowly and can help a person with diabetes keep their levels stable and more balanced after a meal.
Glucerna is available in the form of drinks, powders and meal replacement bars. They are low in calories, high in protein and contain low glycemic index carbohydrates, a fair amount of fibre and fat mainly in the form of monounsaturated fatty acids which are beneficial for people with diabetes as they contribute to heart health and improve cholesterol levels, reducing LDL cholesterol.
Only one of the ingredients of Glucerna, maltodextrin, has a high glycemic index, but the mixture of the remaining ingredients it contains compensates for the glycemic index of maltodextrin and ultimately this increase is slow and small.
As a dietary supplement, 2-3 bottles can be consumed per day, while if food cannot be consumed and used as a complete diet, 5-6 bottles can be consumed per day.
Glucerna will help to better manage blood glucose levels in diabetes, especially after surgery (and without the presence of diabetes) where food intake may be a deterrent for a period of time, in large imbalances in blood glucose levels as a meal replacement and in their better balance later as a dietary supplement.
It is not necessary to take it daily as long as the blood glucose level is balanced, but it is a very good alternative during periods of hyperglycemia.
