DNA is responsible for providing the information needed to create the structure and function of our body.
We can inherit a gene that has the property of causing problems in our health, but the sequence of our DNA can also change randomly, which is called a mutation. Certain mutations in DNA can lead to the appearance of a series of diseases and health problems. Environmental factors also affect the way mutated genes will manifest themselves in our body.
DNA Diet
The same diets cannot be applied to all people, as each person has a different body type, different eating behavior and different activity, that is, they are unique. The DNA Diet tries to help determine the most suitable diet for a person’s health through recommendations based on what would be best, given what is known about the composition of a person’s DNA from a blood test or from a test kit of a small sample of saliva sold in pharmacies.
The companies responsible for analyzing the results of the DNA test claim that they can find possible sensitivity to caffeine, alcohol, salt, gluten, lactose, the body’s ability to detoxify, the body’s need for less carbohydrates and/or proteins and/or fats, the absorption of vitamins and minerals, the predisposition to cardiovascular problems or other chronic diseases.
Some of the companies that analyze the DNA results also provide meal plans, specific recipes, and lists of foods that should be purchased and consumed depending on the results they get from the test they perform.
The DNA diet CANNOT take into account risks such as obesity and anorexia (because they are not always inherent factors in our health) and is not based on a complete clinical picture of someone’s nutritional needs, nor their activity, existing possible diseases and medications they are taking.
Avoiding a food group from our diet for a long time can be dangerous if the incomplete data processed results in speculation and conjecture.
Genes are responsible for explaining only 5% to 10% of diseases, such as type 2 diabetes and obesity.
Diets based on DNA tests are UNLIKELY to offer the personalization they say they do.
Much more important for our health is modifying our incorrect behavior with nutrition according to our needs, according to our activity, in relation to our mental and psychological state.
