Pears are very nutritious fruits as they contain vitamins and minerals, antioxidants such as vitamin C and quercetin that help fight free radicals and reduce possible inflammation, they contain plant anthocyanins and cinnamic acid that help protect mainly from colon cancer and coronary heart disease, they have a low glycemic index and do not sharply increase blood sugar, they contain a large amount of fiber.
Despite their high nutritional value, we should not consume pears in the following cases:
1. Allergy to pears
If we have an allergy to pears, with symptoms such as itching or swelling in the mouth or throat when we consume them, we should stop consuming them.
2. Irritable Bowel Syndrome
If we have irritable bowel syndrome because pears contain Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides And Polyols (FODMAPs), we should avoid them as they will cause gas, bloating and overall discomfort.
3. Gastroesophageal reflux disease
The high fiber content of pears can worsen symptoms such as bloating or reflux if we have gastroesophageal reflux disease.
4. Fructose intolerance
The high fructose content of pears can cause digestive disorders if we cannot absorb fructose.
5. Medication
The fiber in pears can reduce the absorption of antibiotics and should be avoided while we are taking antibiotics.
6. Infants
The high fiber content of pears can cause gastrointestinal upset and diarrhea in infants and they should be introduced with great care, in the form of puree and in small quantities, into their diet.
