UC-II Collagen Supplement for the Prevention and Treatment of Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease with altered homeostasis of articular cartilage and subchondral bone tissues.

Osteoarthritis usually focuses on the lower extremities, especially the knee and hip joints. It can be initiated by genetic factors, environmental factors, metabolic and traumatic factors with the presence of micro- and macro-injuries that create inflammation.

The incidence of knee osteoarthritis is 5.6% in men under 50 years of age, increases to 9.6% at 60 years of age and reaches 44.5% in people over 80 years of age, while in women it occurs at a rate of 18% at 60 years of age and 71.6% in people over 80 years of age.

In athletes, knee osteoarthritis results from traumatic effects on the joints due to intense stress from training or matches.

Research published in the article Proposal for Diet Supplementation to Prevent Knee Osteoarthritis in Female Soccer Players showed that the supplement UC-II (undenatured type II collagen), which maintains its structure and interacts more effectively with the immune system by reducing inflammation, is one of the most promising supplements readily available for the prevention and treatment of osteoarthritis and the restoration of joint function.

UC-II can reduce pain, stiffness, and improve quality of life in patients with osteoarthritis.

In healthy individuals, UC-II prolongs the period of intense effort without pain and relieves joint pain that occasionally occurs during sports activities.

UC-II as a dietary supplement is mainly available in tablets and competitive athletes, as a precaution, should seriously consider periodically incorporating it into their diet plan to avoid problems with their joints.

The usual dosage is 40 mg/day for 3 months.
