Frequent Urination and Foods that Affect it

Frequent urination is the condition of urinating more frequently than normal, either during the day or at night.

This condition can be due to various causes such as increased fluid or caffeine consumption, but also to diseases such as urinary tract infections, overactive bladder, diabetes, prostate hyperplasia, prostatitis, cystitis.

Temporary causes that are normal to create increased urination are excessive water consumption, the intake of coffee or energy gel (due to the caffeine they contain), the intake of alcohol.

Stress can create an increased need to urinate due to activation of the nervous system.

In a cold environment, blood is also rapidly diverted away from the skin to prevent the loss of body heat to the external environment, resulting in more blood and increased pressure passing through the internal organs (and kidneys), creating an increased need to urinate.

Pregnancy creates increased pressure on the bladder due to the growth of the fetus.

The following foods and drinks, because they help produce urine, irritate the bladder or cause bladder spasms, can be avoided if we have an overactive bladder:

Alcoholic drinks
Artificial sweeteners
Brewer’s yeast
Carbonated drinks
Chocolate
Citrus juice and fruits
Coffee
Corn syrup
Raw Onions
Soy sauce
Spicy foods
Sports drinks
Strawberries
Tea
Tomatoes and tomato-based products
Vinegar
Watermelon

Frequent urination requires immediate medical intervention if it is accompanied by:

Hematuria

Fever

Severe pain or burning sensation (unless medication is being taken that has such side effects, especially in men)

Sudden onset with rapid worsening
