Our teeth are….colorful.
The different thickness and colors of the tooth segments reflect the different colors and transparency of the enamel and dentin.
The color of healthy teeth is determined more by the dentin and is influenced by the color of the enamel covering the crown, the translucency and thickness of the enamel, the thickness and structure of the dentin, and by foods.
Maintaining a naturally bright, light-colored set of teeth resulting in a better smile does not always require chemical or dental treatments.
There are certain foods that can naturally help us keep our teeth light, that is, maintain their natural color.
Here are six foods that can contribute to a brighter and healthier smile :
1. Strawberries
Strawberries contain malic acid, an enzyme that has whitening properties that help remove surface stains from our teeth.
2. Apples
The crunchy texture of apples helps remove plaque and food debris from our teeth.
The less food debris remains on our teeth, the less likely it is that our teeth will be stained by the colors of the foods that remain as debris.
3. Carrots
The crunchy texture of carrots, like apples, can act as a natural toothbrush as long as we consume them raw and do not eat them grated or boiled.
4. Broccoli
Raw broccoli helps clean plaque from your teeth and acts as a natural abrasive, helping to polish your teeth and remove surface stains while providing a protective barrier against acids that damage enamel.
5. Pineapple
Pineapple contains bromelain, an enzyme that helps remove stains and break down plaque on your teeth.
6. Cheese
Cheese, especially hard cheeses like cheddar, parmesan, grana, and pecorino, helps remove food debris from your teeth.
It also helps strengthen tooth enamel with its phosphate and calcium content, making teeth more resistant to cavities and stains.
To prevent staining of our teeth, we should limit the following foods because they contain pigments that adhere to tooth enamel:
1. Coffee
2. Red wine
3. Curry
4. Cola
5. Berries
6. Pasta sauce
7. Dark fruit juices
We should also limit foods and drinks with a high sugar content, such as sweets, soft drinks, sugary chewing gum because they create an acidic environment in the mouth and promote cavities, which can lead to tooth discoloration.
