The Mayer stool test detects the presence of hemoglobin in the stool, and is essentially used to investigate bleeding.
Bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract can be caused by medications as well as pathological processes.
Bleeding in the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract results in the creation of black stools, while bleeding from the lower gastrointestinal tract results in bright red blood.
The stool collection must be done after the examinee has to follow a specific diet for 3 days so that there are no false results from exogenous causes.
3 days BEFORE the test we DO NOT consume:
1. Red meat, chicken
2. Fish
3. Citrus fruits (orange, lemon, grapefruit, tangerine)
4. Beets
5. Broccoli
6. Cabbage
7. Cauliflower
8. Turnips
9. Carrots
10. Cucumbers
11. Mushrooms
12. Spinach
13. Celery
14. Melon
15. Banana
We DO NOT consume iron supplements or vitamin C supplements, aspirin, stomach antacids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
We can eat:
1. Apple
2. Pear
3. Corn
4. Peas
5. Green beans
6. Zucchini
7. Whole grains
8. Dairy products (cheese, yogurt, milk)
